Richeldis Fine Art was commissioned to curate the art collection for this extraordinary Sydney residence, working in dialogue with State of Craft’s interiors and one of the most remarkable architectural settings in the city.
Set high above Sydney Harbour, the 900-square-metre residence is defined by an unusual sense of scale: immense volumes, shifting natural light and uninterrupted views across the harbour towards the Opera House. The art collection was conceived in response to these conditions, bringing together works with a strong relationship to material, landscape, form and place.
Throughout the residence, the works operate at very different registers. Gabriel J. Bødker’s monumental soak-stained painting brings an immersive field of ochre and deep teal into the principal living space, its scale and absorption of colour responding to the vastness beyond. An Te Liu’s Idea of an Island introduces a very different physical presence through bronze, while Luke Shadbolt’s photography draws the elemental force of the ocean into the more intimate spaces of the residence.
Rather than treating art as an addition to the interior, the collection was developed as part of the experience of moving through the architecture — sometimes holding its own against the extraordinary views, elsewhere creating quieter moments of materiality, contemplation and focus.
