nicky hodge

N I G H T T I M E WO R D S L E A K OUT

“In creating these new works, Nicky Hodge started from the premise that they would be a series of black-on-black paintings. Employing her usual method of working across several paintings at once, she saturates each raw canvas in watery acrylic, sometimes

rubbing this away to expose the surface further, before layering it with sweeps of minimal, guttural marks. Relying on instinct and spontaneity, these muted and monochromatic paintings depend on first touch and, as such, the final results are unpredictable and

surprising. Each work is contained within its frame, while at the same time, the brushstrokes conversing together between the four edges suggest a desire for flight; there’s a reliable consistency that holds the series together. As individual paintings, each speaks within its

code – a singular language of gestures and layers – alluding to past experiences and harbouring deceptive colour combinations. Quite what they communicate translates through one’s own emotional,

rather than intellectual self.”
