Holger Endres

(1971 in Speyer, Germany)

For more than two decades, Holger Endres has pursued a sustained investigation into the painted line as both a conceptual structure and a physical event. Working within a rigorous methodology, each painting is realised through a single, uninterrupted process, beginning in the upper left corner of the canvas and concluding in the lower right. Every gesture remains visible, allowing the completed work to function as both image and record of its own making.

The line forms the foundation of Endres' practice. Through repetition, subtle variation and the physical act of painting, it becomes a register of movement, duration and presence. Rather than depicting an external subject, the paintings make visible the conditions of their own creation, recording the encounter between body, material and surface. Space, time and perception are condensed into a single gesture, revealing painting not as representation but as an unfolding process.

Although governed by a clear conceptual framework, Endres' work continually negotiates the relationship between structure and contingency. Each painting follows the same underlying methodology, yet no work can be repeated. Every surface preserves the unique sequence of movements through which it came into being, making each work both part of an ongoing serial investigation and an irreducibly singular event. The consistency of this methodology also allows the work to remain independent of place, enabling each painting to absorb the specific conditions of wherever it is made.

Central to Endres' practice is an enduring interest in movement. Between 1998 and 2004 he studied Butoh with Minako Seki, Yumiko Yoshioka and Ishii Mitsutaka, an experience that continues to inform his understanding of rhythm, bodily presence and the relationship between movement and form. Rather than representing the body, his paintings retain the trace of its actions, embedding the physical act of painting directly within the image.

Over the course of his career, Endres has continually expanded this investigation. Early works focused on vertical black lines before gradually evolving into increasingly complex constellations of colour and form. His most recent paintings mark a return to the vertical line—not as repetition, but as a renewed enquiry into the gesture from which his practice first emerged.

Endres studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe (2000–2005) and has been awarded the Neustart Kultur Scholarship (2022), the ArtUp Scholarship Mannheim (2021), and an artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2020–21). Alongside his painting, he has maintained an active practice in performance, choreography and stage design, collaborating extensively with Theater Felina-Areal in Mannheim. His work has been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Galerie Bernd Kugler, Innsbruck, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen, Spark Art Fair Vienna, viennacontemporary, Art Cologne and Modern Art Fair Paris.
