DINO CHATILA

Dino Chatila (b. 1964, Puerto Cabello, Venezuela) is a self-taught visual artist whose practice sits at the intersection of abstraction, minimalism and kineticism. Working across painting, sculpture and installation,Chatila employs a wide range of materials including glass, metal, textiles, paper, acrylic and oil, exploring processes of construction, deformation and transformation.

A formative moment in his development was his participation in the “Painting Space” course led by Jacobo Borges at the Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst in Salzburg, which contributed to a practice balancing creation and destruction, combining mechanical gesture with psychological depth.

His work is defined by layered compositions in which material is added, removed, and reworked, creating a tension between surface and depth, visibility and concealment. This process often involves direct physical engagement — striking, scraping or manipulating materials such as metal or plexiglass — to reveal light, reflection and underlying structure.

Chatila’s abstract works function as visual “memory maps,” where gesture, material and time converge. His practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue with matter, pushing beyond surface appearance to uncover deeper, often hidden, layers of meaning.

Based in Brussels since 2014, Chatila has exhibited in galleries across Europe.
